FAQ's - Frequently Asked Questions What is a short haul move? This is a move that is less than 450 miles. Make sure to inquire with your moving company as you may have to pay long distance charges even for short haul moves. What is a local move? This usually refers to moves that are less than 100 miles and within the same state. What is an intrastate move? This refers to a move of more than 100 miles within the same state. What is a transportation surcharge? This is an extra fee charged when the pickup or destination locations are very remote which results in less return weight for the moving company. What is partial packing? This generally includes the packing and wrapping or pictures, mirrors, glass items, lamps, china cabinets, televisions and furniture. If I’m moving internationally, how will I know which items I can’t bring with me? Your moving company should provide you with a list of custom regulations for your destination country. This document will indicate which items are prohibited or restricted by the particular country. Can I pack and move some smaller items before the movers arrive? Yes, you should spend your time packing boxes and have friends and family members spend their time carrying the boxes to the moving truck. What should I do with essential items I need on my moving day? We recommend that you transport any essentials such as bed linens, towels, toilet paper, cosmetics, toiletries and medication in your own vehicle. If this isn’t possible, clearly mark these boxes and make sure your movers place them in a specific place at your destination. What should I do if I haven’t finished packing by my moving day? If you realized you won’t be finished packing by your move date, make sure to inform your moving company as soon as possible. You may be able to hire professional packers to help you finish the job or move on a different date. Your movers may be able to pack up a small amount of items, but you will end up paying more for the move. What is a non-binding estimate? This is an estimate based on the moving company’s previous experience with similar moving jobs to yours and it’s subject to change. Can my moving company ship my vehicle internationally? Most moving companies can arrange transportation of your vehicle to any country that allows importation. Make sure to check this beforehand as some countries charge very high taxes and duties for importing a vehicle. How will my movers know which items to take and which ones should be left? Make sure you clearly indicate to your packers and movers which exactly which items should be moved and which should stay behind. Mark all boxes appropriately and if possible, designate a separate area for items that should stay. Do I have to hire packers or can I do this myself? You can certainly choose to pack your belongings and hire employees to transport them for you. However, you can also hire professional packers who are very experienced and have access to the proper packing equipment. |
